I opened my email this morning, and was surprised to find a message from Showcase Sisters. They have a blog where they search out favorite products on the web and in the world, and post their personal reviews and thoughts about them. Well, today they did a feature on paper crafts...and they featured my Canada Day Topiary!
I am surprised, tickled, flattered and well, just shocked! Thanks Ladies! What a great email to get on a rainy blah morning!

Time for something SWEET...
I just have a quick post today, I haven't posted any cakes lately.
This is the very large cake I made for my family reunion last weekend.
It is four 9x13" homemade cakes, a double layer carrot cake and a double layer chocolate zucchini cake side by side, both with a cream cheese filling. I crumb coated the whole thing with cream cheese frosting, then put a layer of buttercream fondant on top.
The roses and leaves are handmade of sugarpaste, borders in buttercream, and the family crest is done in royal icing. I had a heck of a time doing the crest...not sure I'll tackle one this large ever again. I first tried a royal icing transfer, but it broke because the shape was too delicate. So I just transfered the outline, then piped everything directly onto the cake. Working with black and red is nerve-wracking! Mistakes can't be easily erased or covered up with these colors...but it turned out well I think, even though I held my breath the whole time.
The cake was a big hit. The kids even ate all the flowers and there were no leftovers! It's always a little heartbreaking to cut into a cake that I spent alot of time on, but I'm more worried that no one will eat it (really what's the point of cake if it's not yummy?), so I am always happy when it's all gone!
Thanks for visiting my blog,

Paper Cubed (P3) August Challenge
Hello all! Are you having a great summer? I am, and it's tough to hole up in my basement craft room when we have places to go and things to do! But I also miss my craft time....
The August challenge at Paper Cubed (P3) is to make some type of photo holder, but NOT a frame. I'll admit this was a bit of a challenge, but just to find the time to do it! I decided to use the jumbo binder clips to actually hold the photo, and while I was at the office supply store to find the binder clips I was inspired to do the whole thing with office supplies!
This went together very quickly. The jumbo binder clips stand by themselves, so that helps! The post it notes and calendar are just glued on, and everything else is clipped on so it can be easily removed when I need it.
Here is a peek at the jumbo binder clips inside, I made a cover on the outside with heavy chipboard just to cover the binder clips, leaving the tops exposed to hold the photos, then covered the chipboard with papers from CTMH ,then sanded and inked the edges. I ran a strip of ribbon around the whole thing, through the loops on the binder clips to hold it together.

The front holds a calendar and a stack of Post-Its, as well as some clips and flower paper clip bookmarks, I tucked my pen inside so it's handy:
The back uses the ribbon to keep business cards handy:
This now sits on my desk holding my favorite pic of my kids, and I've got some handy clips at my finger tips:
